A note from Mr Bray - 29 November, 2019

'Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts.' Psalm 105: 1-2 (NIV) Are you like me and asking the question, ‘Where has the 2019 school year gone?’ This is my second last NCS Bytes article for this year. When I am due to write my final article in a fortnight’s time, the 2019 school year will already have concluded for your children and they will have enjoyed the first day of their Christmas school holidays. As, I stated before, ‘Where has this year gone?’ Well, that was a rather ‘dramatic’ opening to my article and I would like to reassure all of our parents and carers that all th

The SYNERGY Leadership Training Day was extremely beneficial for us, as a new group of prefects, to bring us closer together as a leadership team. We presented a speech to student leaders and Principals from other Christian schools in our region. Presenting the speech helped us to realise our goals and visions for the year. I gained the most from the public speaking workshop, which has really encouraged me to improve my public speaking and has provided me with specific strategies I can use as a leader. Another enjoyable part of the day was meeting the student leaders, from the other Christian school’s, over breakfast. I really enjoyed making friends with these leaders and sharing what we hop

Records made in Wiburd Shield Cricket

On Wednesday 13 November, NCS began their campaign in their very first run at the Wiburd Shield. This is a state-wide cricket competition for students in Years 7-9, where schools from all over NSW are battling to be called Wiburd Shield champions. The first team we played was NAC who, after electing to bat, were all out for 137, just short of their 40 overs. Matt Mc started with the ball, taking 3 for 21 and was at one point on a hat trick. Noah T, Jack L, Matt S, Micah E, Rohan B and Ollie E all shared the wickets with some great bowling. Darien M and Eddie R took some great catches, whilst Isaac C and Robert v P provided great support in the field. With the total to chase, the boys were a

Seniors settle in with Foundation Studies

On Monday Years 11 and 12 began Foundation Studies. The whole day was dedicated to making a smooth start to our Senior schooling by beginning on the right foot. The day began with a devotion from Mr Bray that encouraged us to unite as a group to lead younger students in our school and use our God-given talents. Mrs Dallimore and Mrs Meek then gave a presentation covering what is expected of us as Seniors and they were extremely helpful in explaining how this little complex thing called the HSC works. Perhaps one of the most enjoyable parts of the day was a bonding session run by our school counsellors, Mrs Dearsley and Mrs Donald. This session involved separating into our House groups and co

A note from Mr Bray - 15 November, 2019

Focus verse: ‘Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.’ John 15: 13 I am confident that all members of our school community will remember this past fortnight for many years to come. It is a very unusual event to close a school completely in mid-term and, of course, this is the decision that was made on Tuesday of this past week as a result of the fire rating level in the Shoalhaven district reaching ‘catastrophic’. We can more fully understand the scope of the bushfire threat facing our state when we realise that NCS was just one of more than 600 schools and TAFE centres who made the significant decision to close on this day. I would wish to take this oppo

Language Perfect Champions

This week, students received their awards from the Language Perfect World Championships. This is an online language learning competition that runs for a week. Students translate as many words as possible over that time. Here are some statistics about how our school (ie. Year 8 French students) went on a global scale: 559th out of 1,644 schools globally 2nd in Australia for French in the small schools category (54 schools) 1st in French in NSW in the small schools category (17 schools) This was an amazing effort. Our top scorers were: Jasmine H with a Gold certificate (over 3,000 points) Sarah K Silver certificate (2550 points) Lilly D Silver (2118 points) Micah E Bronze (1001 points) Credit

Busking @ Husky and Vincentia

On Monday 4 November the Secondary Concert Band had the opportunity to go to Huskisson Park and Vincentia Marketplace to play 14 songs for the community. It was a wonderful experience and the community really loved the music we were playing. It was hard to play outside because there were no walls to bounce our sound off. I really enjoyed playing in Vincentia marketplace because there were lots of walls so we were very loud and had a large audience to play for. We would like to say thank you to Mrs Lawrence for organizing such a lovely day, to Mr West for driving us and our equipment to and from the event, to Mr Drury for playing the trumpet and filling a massive hole in our band, to Mr Bray

Movers and Groovers...

In Term 4, Years 1 and 2 have been learning about India. We have asked a number of Essential Questions, such as “How is India similar and different to Australia?”, “What religions are followed in India? Do they know and worship Jesus?” and “How and why do people celebrate in India?” As we learned about a number of festivals, we were privileged to take part in a dance workshop. The lovely dance teacher talked to us about some of the history of India. After learning a number of steps, we joined these together to take part in our own Indian dance. We had so much fun! At the end we were able to wear beautiful scarves to help us celebrate our dance. Congratulations Stage 1, on your excellent be

A note from Mr Bray - 1 November 2019

Focus verse: ‘Be still and know that I am God…’ Psalm 46: 10(a) (NIV) As always, life at NCS continues to provide an amazing variety of learning programs and special events. This past fortnight has certainly been no exception. Elsewhere in this edition of the BYTES, you will be able to read about many sporting events, ranging from biathlons and triathlons through to basketball gala days. There have been special assemblies and musical performances and throughout this entire time, our HSC students have been continuing their study and examination program. However, without doubt, one of the major highlights of this past week was our special assembly and flag-raising ceremony, held at NCS on Frid

NCS Students perform with ACT Combined Band

It wasn't 76 trombones . . . it was 76 musicians with all kinds of instruments and they were on tour from the ACT. The sound was loud and magnificent. The repertoire was complex and spectacular. Our NCS students were stretched and impressed. What a privilege to join with such capable Years 7 and 8 students in rehearsal and concert at the Nowra School of Arts last Thursday night. Congratulations to: Darcy T, Tobias H, Ame C, Lilly D, Caitie S, Ollie Ellery and Chloe C. Mrs Lawrence

A wonderful display of 'community' at our Flag Raising Ceremony

Our school community joined together with local Aboriginal Elders, dignitaries and special guests to celebrate the raising of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. The raising of the flags was initiated by Year 5 student Sharnhi who approached Mr Dickinson, Chairman of the Board and asked if the school could fly both the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags alongside the Australian flag. A special assembly was held on Friday, 25 October and students enjoyed a traditional Aboriginal welcome dance by visiting dancers from St John the Evangelist High School. Local Elder, Uncle Tom Moore from ShACC (Shoalhaven Aboriginal Community Church) presented a Welcome to Country. This

Stage 2 Visit Science Space

On Friday of Week One, Year 3 and Year 4 travelled to Science Space in Wollongong. Upon arrival, we were guided to a lovely covered area outside the Science Centre. This area had tables and chairs for us to sit at and enjoy our recess. Shortly after, our students were summoned into the Science Space Planetarium - a dome-shaped cinema with a 4k laser projection system. Inside the Planetarium, we were taken on an entirely immersive tour of the universe. It was amazing! After learning lots about the universe, we were directed into a different room for the Physical Phenomena Show. We learnt all about energy. There were balloons, serving trays, bouncing balls and a glass of water. Levi may have

South Coast Youth Leadership Forum

Last weekend, three Year 10 students: Isabelle M; Kaylee B & Micah P; joined a select group of students, from other local high schools, to attend the South Coast Youth Leadership Forum at Waterslea Conference Centre. The SCYLF website explains: ‘SCYLF has joined forces with local businesses and aims to assist young people by providing opportunities and resources to fulfill a dream on the simple belief that they can create change. The program has been refined to create strong relationships within the Shoalhaven community between businesses and youth alike in order to generate a movement that will assist young people of the Shoalhaven to discover their purpose and be part of something trul

Stage 2 Basketball Gala Day

Eighteen students from Years 3 and 4 recently enjoyed the opportunity to visit the brand new Indoor Sports Complex in Bomaderry for a Basketball Gala Day. We entered two teams of boys and a girls team in a fun-filled day of basketball with local schools. Despite being out-matched in the majority of games, these wonderful students maintained a positive spirit and displayed pleasing sportsmanship throughout the day. They kept trying until the final buzzer and did manage to finish with one win and a draw. Congratulations to Caleb McLennan, who was our highest point scorer! It was an exciting day to play and enjoy watching games of basketball in the comfort of a brand new venue. Thank you and co
