Tessellation in 5/6CM

At the end of Term 2, our maths group was learning about “Tessellation”. What is tessellation?

Tessellation simply means covering a surface with a repeated pattern so that there are no gaps or spaces. We investigated which 2D shapes would tessellate and which ones would not. Some shapes would tessellate on their own. Some shapes would tessellate when we used 2 shapes in the pattern. We made some tessellation patterns using 2D shapes and drawings.

We also learnt that we could find tessellation patterns around us and in nature such as honeycomb, pineapple skin, snake skin, brick walls and tiles.

Can you find more tessellation patterns/designs around you?
