Friday, 17 August saw 19 NCS students, their parents and a teacher make their way to Blacktown for the CSSA Primary State Athletics carnival.
The team competed in lots of individual events, as well as 4 relays. The day was unseasonably hot and caused the competitors a few issues early on, but they persevered, their efforts certainly were inspirational. There were incredible performances throughout the day, including top ten finishes for Jayla B, Emily M, Hamish M, Charlie L B, Nancy O and Rubymay P.
Noah T jumped 1.25m in high jump - a 2cm 'PB'. Jayla threw discus almost 3m further than at zone to finish second and qualify for the next level of competition - CIS (woot-woot!), Charlie improved her zone discus by over 2m, Josh C knocked almost 6 seconds off his 800m time! Hamish threw the discus over 4m further and his sister Emily smashed her zone time for 1500m by over 18 seconds (that's a lot!). Nancy threw the shot put 35cm further and Rubymay shaved half a second off her zone 200m time.
All our relay teams ran hard, didn't drop any batons and 2 of them improved on their zone times! Great job!
Our students were amazing in their support of one another. Some of my favourite moments were the 'small things' throughout the day, like Josh's concern for his mate Joel, who was sick whilst running 800m. He just wanted to find him to see if he was okay. Another was Keonie A, popping over to console a fellow competitor from another school, who fell over and 'face-planted' during their relay. A pat on the back and well-done from Keonie must have meant so very much to her, I'm sure.
Huge heartfelt thanks to all the parents and grandparents who provided transport, support and so much more to the whole team. Your children are a credit to you and to our school. We very much look forward to hearing how Jayla B fairs when she competes in 12 years girls discus at the Combined Independent Schools Athletics Carnival (CIS) at Homebush, Sydney in about 3 weeks.
