Maree McGrath
Strings
Maree is a music educator with 3 decades of experience and ongoing professional learning. She holds a Master of Music Education (Instrumental), and a Diploma in Teaching (Primary).
Maree comes to NCS as a guitar tutor. She has been playing guitar since taking it up in high school, and began teaching guitar out of necessity in small town high schools where tutors were either scarce or non-existent. Maree is especially good with young beginners due to her sound-before-symbols approach influenced by some recent Kodaly training (Kodaly Certificate I, Primary).
Maree has been the Director of the Goulburn Regional Conservatorium, and has held music teaching positions (including Head Teacher Music) in Tumut, Goulburn and Bowral before moving to Nowra where she has now been teaching Primary School Music for the last 13 year. With such a wealth of classroom experience at Secondary and Primary school levels, Maree’s lessons cater to all levels and learning styles. Lessons are tailored to the student’s interests. Exam preparation is offered if that is something students and their families require. Along with her husband Richard Hodge, Maree is one of our local Trinity College London music exam representatives.
Much of Maree’s experience has been in the area of Woodwind and Brass tuition, and in developing band programs. You may have seen Maree conducting the local Shoalhaven City Concert Band here at our school Tuning In Concerts. She is the musical director of this band and has recently set up a Beginner Band offering free lessons, using a new range of light, child-friendly wind instruments.
Maree is only available on Fridays at NCS at present and most lesson times are filled, but families are welcome to register for lessons and have their names on the waiting list.
